Hillsborough Named a 2007 Distinctive Destination
The National Trust for Historic Preservation recognized Hillsborough as one of the United States’ dozen distinctive destinations in 2007.
“Hillsborough is a perfect Southern host — charming, hospitable and always fun,” said Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “While Hillsborough cherishes its history, this is no staid museum exhibit but a vibrant town with an eye firmly focused on the future.”
In selecting Hillsborough for the 2007 Dozen Distinctive Destinations list, the trust noted the town’s role in the revolutionary and civil wars, its downtown historic district, the speedway from NASCAR’s inaugural 1949 season and festivals for war re-enactors and barbecue lovers.
Hillsborough was selected from 63 destinations nominated by individuals, preservation organizations and local communities. The annual list recognizes unique communities in which residents have taken forceful action to protect their town’s character and sense of place.
The other communities named to the 2007 list are: Charlottesville, Va.; Chatham, Mass.; Chestertown, Md.; Durango, Colo.; Ellensburg, Wash.; Little Rock, Ark.; Mineral Point, Wis.; Morgantown, W. Va.; Providence, R.I.; West Hollywood, Calif.; and Woodstock, Ill. The National Trust also recognized New Orleans for exemplary achievement in heritage tourism.
