Green Initiatives

Creating a more sustainable community is a top priority for Hillsborough leaders as the health and well-being of our environment is linked to the quality of life in Hillsborough. The town is participating in state- and national-level sustainability initiatives, including the North Carolina League of Municipalities Green Challenge and Sierra Club's Cool Cities. The League of Municipalities' Green Challenge is comprised of three levels: Level I, Intermediate and Advanced. The town achieved Level I in 2008 and is working to achieve Intermediate standing.
To reduce the environmental impacts of town operations and services, energy audits were conducted on major town facilities in July 2007. Energy audit recommendations are being phased in over a multi-year period.
