Changes to Hillsborough’s Curbside Collections to Start in November

In response to tough economic times, the Town of Hillsborough is making changes to its curbside collection services. Most changes started in November.

Residents still will receive a high level of service, but the changes will reduce costs and free Public Works employees for other duties.

A brochure on the changes — including a calendar for the remainder of the year and 2012 — was mailed to all residents in early October. Those who did not receive a copy may pick one up at Town Hall at 101 E. Orange St. or at the Town Hall Annex at 137 N. Churton St.

At both locations, residents also may receive a free sample of twine to be used for bundling small amounts of brush.

Loose Leaf Collection Changes
  • The loose leaf collection season will be one month shorter, starting in November and ending Jan. 31. As in the past, leaves must be placed in biodegradable paper bags for collection after the leaf season ends. A maximum of 10 bags per property will be removed on collection day.
Brush Collection Changes
  • Brush will be collected weekly during the loose leaf collection season, November through Jan. 31.
  • Beginning February 2012, brush will be collected once every two weeks until the loose leaf collection season starts.
  • Small amounts of brush must be placed in biodegradable paper bags or tied into bundles using jute, sisal or hay baling twine if the amount is less than 30 pounds. No plastic or cotton twine may be used. Bundling and bagging brush allows for more efficient collection, saving labor and fuel costs. Residents with a few sticks should allow a bagful or several armfuls to accumulate before placing brush at the curb.
  • Brush collection will change from Thursday to Friday for these streets:
    • East Margaret Lane
    • St. Mary’s Road
    • North and South Cameron Street
    • Caine Street
    • East King Street
    • Mitchell Street
    • East Orange Street
    • East Queen Street
    • Thomas Ruffin Street
    • East Tryon Street
    • East Union Street
Bulk Items Collection Changes
  • Bulk items will be collected once a month during the second full week of each month. If the scheduled collection day falls on a town-observed holiday, bulk items will be removed the following business day.
  • Bulk items should be placed at the curb no earlier than one week before collection.
  • Items that are too bulky, heavy or cumbersome may require payment of a fee based on the nature and amount of the materials and the estimated time required to perform the service.
