Hillsborough Extends Timeline for Development Ordinance Rewrite, Offers Monthly Work Sessions

Hillsborough Awards Bid for Construction of Downtown Sidewalk

The Town of Hillsborough has accepted a bid of $144,269.50 from White Oak Construction of New Hill for construction of a sidewalk and other improvements on Margaret Lane.

White Oak was the lowest responsible bidder of eight proposals received on April 1. Two bids were not accepted due to a lack of appropriate licenses for road work.

Investigation Finds Improper Record Keeping for Hillsborough Police Department’s Accreditation Process

Hillsborough Town Manager Eric Peterson is nearing the end of an investigation regarding improper recordkeeping in the Police Department’s CALEA accreditation process.

The investigation has revealed that department staff backdated documents created to demonstrate compliance with various CALEA standards.

“No indications of any problems regarding criminal record keeping and felony prosecution files have been found,” the town manager said.

Hillsborough Names Acting Police Chief

A commander within the Hillsborough Police Department will serve as acting police chief when the current chief steps down, Hillsborough’s town manager announced today.

Effective at 5:01 p.m. April 2, Lt. Davis Trimmer will assume command of the Police Department until a permanent replacement is hired. Chief Clarence Birkhead, Hillsborough’s police chief for almost five years, will step down at 5 p.m.

Hillsborough’s Police Chief Resigns

Hillsborough Police Chief Clarence Birkhead will step down as the Police Department’s head on April 2.

“As you know, I am a candidate for sheriff of Orange County,” the police chief stated in his resignation letter. “I feel that I should devote all of my energies to my campaign. Under the circumstances, I feel it is best for the Town of Hillsborough and my campaign to step down.”

Hillsborough Tree Board Names First Treasure Tree

A southern red oak has earned the distinction of the Town of Hillsborough’s first Treasure Tree.

The southern red oak (Quercus falcata) is on an empty lot at 406 W. Hill Ave. S. It is “remarkable because of its beautiful, open structure and unusually wide canopy,” wrote arborist Chip Hildreth, a member of the Hillsborough Tree Board.
